Silinus procerus (Lewis, 1911)
Silinus procerus: Mazur & Zhou, 2001: 73.
Silinus reichardti Kryzhanovskij, 1972b: 24 [China, Szetchwan prov.,].; Mazur, 1999: 62., synonymized by Mazur & Zhou, 2001: 73.
Platysoma taedulus Kryzhanovskij, 1972b: 24 [nom. nud.].
Original description of S. reichardt (Kryzhanovskij, 1972).
"Elongate-oval, moderately convex, parallel-sided. Black
and pitchy brown, shining, antennal scape brown. Frons anteriorly
and clypeus concave, smooth, with micro-punctures. Mandibles smooth,
dorso-externally with deep excavation, dorsally with carina. Pronotum
1.8 times broader than long, sides nearly straight in basal half,
rounded apically to the prominent front angles; lateral and anterior
margins with sharp complete marginal stria, as also along the
whole basis; surface smooth. Elytra together as long as broad,
surface smooth, even at the apical margin without punctures; dorsal
striae thin, impunctate, first to third complete, fourth and fifth
represented by apical rudiments, the sutural absent, the humeral
thin, the subhumeral absent or represented by a short fragment
behind the humeral tubercle and in the apical third; two epipleural
striae are present; a more or less distinct impression is marked
behind the shoulder. Propygidium with slightly impressions at
the sides, with rather sparse flat punctures (intervals equal
to 1 - 3 diameters of punctures), finer along the basal and apical
margins. Pygidium with denser, flat punctures (intervals equal
to 0.7 - 1.5 diameters of punctures); in the male slightly impressed
along the sides. Prosternum without striae; prosternal lobe with
complete marginal stria. Mesosternal marginal stria absent medially,
distinct along the sides. Protibiae with four large teeth on the
outer margin; mesotibiae with two teeth and double preapical tooth;
metatibiae with one denticle at the middle and double preapical
tooth. Aedeagus, fig. 7C; parameres not fused apically. Length
(excl. head and pygidia) 7.5 - 10 mm.
Differs form the Australian S. robustus (Schm.) by the presence
of only three complete striae; from S. pinniger (Lew.) and S.
palmatus Lew. by less dilated meso- and metatibiae and by the
presence of only one denticle at the middle of metatbiae; in addition
it is the largest species of the genus.
Silinus Lew. belongs to the insufficiently known genera of the
tribe Platysomini. It is related to Platysoma Leach and Platylister
Lew. in general form and structure, but differs by margined basis
of pronotum and larger size. Three species of Silinus were previously
known: two from Indonesia (Sumatra, Java) and one from Australia.
The occurrence of the genus in the Szetchwan province shows one
more how many purely tropical groups of animals inhabit even the
central provinces of China.
Named in honour of the late Dr. A. N. Reichardt, who recognized
this species for the first time and labelled specimens form Mt.
Yunling as "S. taedulus Rchdt." (in litt.)."
