The Research Division at the Hokkaido University Museum is made up of three research groups. The Section of Fundamental Studies on Academic Resources and Specimens carries out basic research on scientific specimens and academic resources, along with activities to serve the needs of interdisciplinary research and educational utilization. The Section of Applied Studies on Academic Resources and Specimens carries out developmental research aimed at effective utilization of scientific specimens and academic resources as raw materials for education and research; it is also engaged in research related to specimen preservation.
The Section of Museum Education and Media Studies serves as a bridge between the Museum and the public, researching the student education characteristics of university museums. It also develops higher educational programs using video and archived image data. No long history of research in the fields of museum pedagogy and archival studies of moving image and research materials exists in Japan; the Section has drawn attention for its groundbreaking work in this area.
